Demarcation
The Awrelian Demarcation was created by Awrelias Severus Tigius shortly after being appointed the first consul of the New Republic. The Demarcation marks the rough boundary between lands where magic works and lands where it does not. The original purpose was to help the military define a position of strategic retreat. At the time of its creation, Hesberian forces could expect their magically augmented opponents would lose their advantage behind the demarcation.
The demarcation itself is a series of columns in the ... province bearing the inscription “gafe nekorum” (beware of magic). Each column is spaced about 200 yards about, stands about 5 feet high, and are not adorned with any ornamentation. The original demarcation ran 15 miles along the southeastern part of the empire. Various addition have been created through the years by Hesberian generals, but with the taking of Gursova and Bithynia by Cajus, the extensions have become unnecessary. As of the time of this writing, there is a road, Foye Awrelias, built just west the columns. Originally a military road to allow for the quick movement of forces, this road now connects cities along the demarcation and beyond to the North and Southwest.
Columns created in the north are more rare, there is some dispute as to which general or local official created these columns.
